Preparing potting soil
Soil supplies all the nutrition your plant needs. So it is necessary that we should make a better one for our plants. Though potting soil is available in market in different quantities it cost us. Here I will let you know how to make good potting soil for your plants.
First let us know what should a potting mix contain and what is the proportion.
Well soil should contain nutrition, aeration and it should also drain. So the proportion is
- 1 part of garden soil
- 1 part of vermiculite
- 1 part of dry leaf (or) rice husk
- 1 part of river sand.
Garden soil
Garden soil is the ordinary top layer of dust that we have in our garden, farm etc. This has traces of nutrients and minerals in it. If you can get some alluvium soil i.e. the soil found in dry lakes, ponds and river basins it good, as it contains a lot of mineral and nutrient. Don’t just use garden soil as it will not allow proper draining of water, which will result in root rot.
Vermicompost
This is really organic and we can get this from stores or from nurseries nearby. Add a part of it. This has adequate quantity of N, P, K i.e. NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, Potassium and other micro nutrients. So this will feed you plant all that it needs.
- Nitrogen is necessary to give the green color of the plant. We all know plants are green due to the photosynthesis that takes place when sunlight hit the leaves. This is done by chlorophyll and is composed mainly of nitrogen.
- Phosphorus enriches the root system.
- Potassium this is needed for the healthiness of the plant by fighting against disease.
As
vermicompost contains all these it nourishes the plant in all ways. This is organic, non toxic and odorless. You can add to your pots at a definite interval after potting it. It doesn’t burn plants root so no need to worry.
Dry leaves or Rice husk
They become organic matter when they decompose. This slow release will keep your plants healthy. They tend to provide proper drainage and aeration.
River soil
As you know garden soil will be hard enough for air and water to penetrate. Adding river soil loosens it up. It also contains some minerals and nutrients. It’s important to add river soil for good drainage.
Now mix them altogether and here we got our potting mix. After adding all this just take a hand full of the mix and squeeze it by your hands then shake a little if the mix doesn’t hold tight then we have made it.
In this method we have just bought some vermicompost we can even make it in our backyard.
